UWS Sirens show what they’re made of on home soil for the first time this season, with a win against Team Northumbria 45-40 in front of a 1,000 strong crowd.

Starting 7: Slater GS, Gallagher GA, Murphy WA, Bayman C, Kennedy GD, Aiken-Pinnock GK. All 7 played a full 4 quarters of top-flight netball, and after a string of 3 tough games away from home against last season’s top sides, UWS Sirens knew that they had to make their mark in the 4^th round of the VNSL.

First quarter saw Team Northumbria take the lead 9-13 after a slow start for UWS Sirens. However, it was the second quarter where the team seized control and finally got their second season up and running. UWS Sirens thoroughly deserved their 24-19 half time lead, where we saw some special phases of play in defence and the ex-TN star Leah Kennedy was under no pressure against her old teammates.

Kennedy said: “It was always going to be tough. Both teams needed the win and I was up against my old team. They know my game and what would niggle at me, but I had to remain composed. It was fantastic to see we are starting to click and the combinations are coming together. This is only going to keep growing from here”

The mid-court dynamics of Brownie, Bayman and Murphy clicked into place and provided the home crowds with some spectacular through court action, turning over ball and delivering in style to the shooting duo of Gallagher and Slater.

Third and fourth quarters saw UWS Sirens continuing the momentum, while Team Northumbria struggled to close the gap, resulting in their fourth defeat this season.

Head Coach Dearns said: “Since our last match against Wasps, we talked about consolidating good starts and to take it one centre pass at a time. I’m really pleased we were able to sustain that through the whole sixty minutes. There were times where they were off-task, but they showed good composure to be able to maintain focus and there certainly was a level of desire that wasn’t there before.”

Player of the Match Bayman said: “We had a bit of a nightmare start to the season but its great to get the win under our belts this evening against Team Northumbria and it’s definitely given us that confidence boost before we head to play Team Bath on Friday. The home crowd were awesome tonight too, they helped us across the line for sure.”
