Wasps Netball secured a comfortable 61-44 victory against Team Bath on their return to Vitality Netball Superleague action.

Commonwealth Games gold medal winners Natalie Haythornthwaite and Jade Clarke returned for Wasps, with England teammate Kadeen Corbin taking to the court for the visitors at the Ricoh Arena.

The game provided the hosts with a ninth successive victory, left them unbeaten this season and top of the Superleague table.

Wasps netball director Tamsin Greenway praised the contributions of her gold medal pair.

“It’s good to be back and especially to be back with a win,” she said.

“Having Nat and Jade back was huge for us. The impact they had on the game was phenomenal, it was a really quality performance from them both.

“It was back to business today after the Commonwealth Games and I thought defensively we were on fire. We got everything thrown at us and were still able to come out on top.

“We were challenged throughout, as we’re the scalp everyone wants, but we want to be under that pressure. You can see the team is full of confidence and teams are hard to beat when they play with this much belief.”

The visitors were without star goal keeper Eboni Beckford-Chambers and replacement Zanele Vimbela struggled to handle Wasps’ shooter George Fisher in the opening stages.

Despite Haythornthwaite and Clarke linking well, Bath managed to keep pace with the hosts as good attacking work from Corbin left them trailing by only five at the end of the first quarter.

A flying interception from Sam May kick-started the second period for Wasps, and with May continuing her dominant defensive display and limiting opportunities for Bath shooter Chelsea Lewis, the home side took control of the game.

After the half-time break, Fisher starred for Wasps, and linked up well with Haythornthwaite to extend the home lead to double figures.

Bath battled hard and sought to work their way back into the game, but were hindered by a series of misplaced passes.

Lucy Harris came onto the court for the final quarter as the home side pressed home their advantage to run out 61-44 winners.

Wasps’ next home fixture sees them face Manchester Thunder on Friday, April 27 (7.00pm centre-pass).
