Mary Cholhok named in Uganda’s Vitality Netball World Cup squad

Loughborough Lightning’s Mary Cholhok has been named in Uganda’s squad for the Vitality Netball World Cup in Liverpool this July.

The 6ft 7 goal shooter gave headaches to defenders throughout the Vitality Netball Superleague season, improving every game.

Her shooting prowess helped fire Lightning up the VNSL table and saw her secure the Gilbert Golden Shot Award.

The road Cholhok has travelled to reach the Vitality Netball Superleague – and now the Vitality Netball World Cup – has been full of obstacles and challenge.

She’ll now link up with former Lightning fan favourite Peace Proscovia this summer.

The She Cranes have developed rapidly over the last few years, rising from 15th (August 2014) in the International Netball Federation’s world rankings to seventh (April 2018).

They first appeared at the 1979 edition of the Netball World Cup where they came equal 13th with St Lucia, while their best finish to date came at the 2015 edition where they finished eighth.

The She Cranes beat Zambia 64-56 on the penultimate day of their regional qualifier to secure their place in Liverpool. They join Zimbabwe as the qualifiers from the Africa region and are one of five African teams participating at the event.

Uganda have already experienced playing at the home of this year’s World Cup, following their clash against the Vitality Roses in November last year.

They’ll begin their campaign against the hosts England on Friday 12th July before going head-to-head with Samoa on Saturday 13th and then concluding Preliminaries Stage One against Scotland on Sunday 14th.
