Share Surrey Storm goal shooter Sigi Burger has been called up to the South African squad for the Vitality Netball World Cup. Burger joins her Vitality Netball Superleague teammate Shadine Van Der Merwe in the squad that will take on Trinidad and Tobago and Fiji in the group stages in Liverpool later this month. Burger’s inclusion comes after Ine-Marí Venter had to withdraw from the squad due to an injury picked up in training. Burger has already joined the squad and is preparing for two test matches against Wales in preparation for the Vitality Netball World Cup. Mikki Austin, who coaches Burger at Surrey Storm, said: “I am very pleased to hear the news of Sigi Burger and her call up into the South Africa team for Vitality Netball World Cup. “Sigi has been in a similar situation during last year’s Commonwealth Games and was a consummate professional so I expect this to be no different. “She will be a great asset to the South Africa team and I look forward to seeing them compete in Liverpool.” Burger, who has 13 caps for South Africa, will be playing in her first World Cup and will be hoping to carry her domestic form into the international competition. Over the course of 15 games, Burger finished the season with an impressive shooting percentage of 94% and with the league’s highest average number of goals per match. Bongiwe Msomi and Maryka Holtzhausen, of Wasps and Severn Stars respectively, are also in the South African squad.
