Loughborough Lightning secured a vital victory against Severn Stars at the Copper Box Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Severn Stars Head Coach Melissa Bessell talked in pre-match interviews about the stars squad having their own targets set for the game, knowing that being competitive with current league leaders Loughborough Lightning would be a challenge.

However Stars rose to that challenge, providing an entertaining and competitive game that finished 50-41 to Loughborough Lightning.

A fast first set of goals from both teams, Natalie Panagarry at centre dictating play through the centre court and linking well with her shooter Mary Cholhok.

Birthday girl Georgia Rowe for stars started the game with strong holds and 100% shooting stats. Stars seemed to struggle on getting the ball into their attacking third with the pressure being applied by Lightning wing defence Beth Cobden. The first quarter finished 12-9 to Lightning.

Stars brought Kyra Jones to C for the start of the second quarter but some miscommunication between Reed and Rowe and ball placement errors in the through court from Stars, allowed gap to grow to eight.

Loughborough Lightning’s Sam May at goal defence was able to read the play through court and pick off intercepts. Herdman for Stars at goal keeper, with a back and up interception caused disruption to Lightnings flow and kept Stars within a competitive distance with the half time score at 19-26.

Lightning changed up their defensive pairing, bringing Sam May back to goal keeper. A bright start to the third by Severn Stars with a turnover from Dee Bolakoro at goal defence.

Following this fancy footwork from Jones at centre for Stars, allowed her to find Reed under the post and the gap closed to five. With four minutes left in the quarter, Lightning’s Beth Cobden at wing defence turned over the ball only for Stars' Nia Jones to also turn over the ball. Stars continued to stay in contention and the third quarter finished 36-31.

No changes from either side going into the last quarter. Lightning’s Mary Cholhok missed her first attempt at the quarter, Herdman won the rebound but stars were unable to convert. Frantic play followed from both sides as the scoreline fluctuated between four and five goals.

Footwork by Bolakoro allowed lightning the chance to finish the game followed up by Ella Clark at Lightning GA comfortable scoring at range. Clark’s shooting allowing Loughborough to pull away to a 50-41 finish.

"I am really pleased with start to finish," said Severn Stars Head Coach Melissa Bessell. "Every quarter we kept pushing forward, we even won a quarter, and we didn’t loose momentum."
