How and when did you get involved in umpiring?

As a player my team needed a volunteer to umpire as part of the requirements for entering a local league - it all started from being involved locally & achieving the C Award Qualification.

What has been your favourite memory on or off court?

The very first superleague game I did was Dragons v Wasps in Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. Was a real mixture of nerves & excitement but friends and family were there to support. It was a really special moment & a dream come true.

Do you have any pre-match rituals before a game?

Arrive to venue with plenty of time, meet venue staff. Fuel with food & a hot drink, warm up with headphones in with an upbeat sound track. Run through some hand signals during warm up to get in the zone ready for the game.

Who has had the biggest influence on your umpiring so far?

Ali Harrison - lead the way for umpires in Wales to become high performance & even step onto the international stage. We first played against each other then with each other on the same team to now umpiring together. Ali is always there for advice & support - a great role model for aspiring umpires.

What is the best part about being a Super League umpire?

Being part of a high performing team, being supported & learning from the best umpires & assessors around & the friends you meet along the way.

What advice would you give to someone considering becoming an umpire?

Having a good knowledge & application of the rules is really important. Be clear & consistent with your communication to players. Enjoy the process!
