Share Taken during the Netball Super League match between Cardiff Dragons and London Pulse at the House of Sport, Cardiff, Wales on 30th March 2024 In just her second season umpiring at the elite domestic level, Emma Parker has won her first award in the Netball Super League. After making her debut in 2023 and umpiring two fixtures, Emma has umpired consistently well throughout the 2024 season, taking charge of eight matches and being the reserve umpire on another eight occasions. Emma shares how her officiating journey started by chance and has since led her to the world of the NSL. “My journey into umpiring began by needing an umpire at training, no one really wanted to do it, so I stepped up. The same thing kept happening at tournaments etc, so I took the whistle. Emma’s abilities and potential as an umpire quickly became apparent, and she found herself frequently taking on the role of umpire, which eventually led her to pursue formal qualifications. Through her development, Emma was encouraged each step of the way by her mentor, June Tenwick from Surrey. Emma progressed from her C award to B, and finally, her A award. “My B award assessors told me to take my A and off I went. I joined the Premier League as an A award, then NPL and after a few years found myself in the Super League! “I was very fortunate to have an excellent mentor, I owe her a lot for my journey and will be forever grateful. Her journey wasn’t without its challenges, including a break for personal reasons, but with the right support from those around her and from England Netball, Emma’s return was smooth and welcomed. For Emma, umpiring is more than just a role on the court. “I love the excitement of the game and being involved in any capacity is truly fabulous. Umpires play a crucial role in keeping the game safe and within the rules, and I enjoy that responsibility. Her passion for the sport and her commitment to fair play are evident each time she steps onto the court. “Umpiring is good for the mind and the soul! Now in her second season in the Netball Super League, Emma reflects on her growth and experiences. “This season has been incredible. Being fully involved and running more games has been a highlight. Despite the challenges brought by new rules, Emma embraced the season with enthusiasm. “In my first season there were a lot more nerves, this season I knew what was heading my way and I was able to embrace it more fully, the nerves are still there but I use them positively. Being involved in more than one capacity in the sport, Emma draws netball inspiration from a variety of sources. “On the court, Pamela Cookey was my favourite player. As an umpire, I look up to our international umpires from England and Wales,” These role models have shaped her aspirations and fuelled her drive to excel in her umpiring career. “If you are considering getting into umpiring, do it! With more support available in the umpiring community, Emma believes that the first step, though daunting, is incredibly rewarding. “Umpiring has come a long way and there is so much more support out there to help people in their journeys, taking the first step can only come from you. Winning the NSL Umpire Assessor of the Year award is a testament to Emma’s hard work and dedication. “When I found out I had won, I was speechless and a little emotional. Being recognized in anything you do in your life is always so appreciated. “Having my children beside me as I collected the assessors’ award was absolutely priceless.
