Manchester Thunder hit Severn Stars for sixty

Severn Stars opened the third weekend of the Vitality Netball Super League (VNSL) 2021 fixtures on Saturday 28th February in Production Park Studio 001, Wakefield with their Roudn 4 match against Manchester Thunder.

The reigning champions got off to a convincing start, scoring a quick six goals without a reply.

Quicker ball speed and greater depth on second phase by captain Liana Leota allowed Stars to get on the board and settle into the game.

Stars started by playing a rotating circle, with Paige Reed at goal shooter and Jane Taylor in at goal attack. Lucy Herdman continued her form from the opening weekend with a couple of vital turn overs that stars successfully converted to goal. The quarter ended 7-14 to Thunder.

An early turn over from Nia Jones in the second quarter looked like the momentum was going to change but the pressure applied by Thunder resulted in a number of forced errors and Stars failed to capitalise.

The youngest member of the Stars squad, Issy Eaton, 16, made her debut by entering the game at goal shooter with Read moving to GA.

Play of the Match Joyce Mvula and Eleanor Cardwell linked well in the shooting circle for thunder, with strong feeds from England Roses players Malcolm and Carter allowing Thunder to pull away, ending the first half 14-32.

Bessell tried a number of combinations during the third quarter, with Stars showing at times what they can do with good composure and patient play.

At other times, miscommunication and poor ball placement resulted in an experienced Thunder side dominating play and outscoring Stars 15 to six during the critical third quarter.

The final quarter highlighted the depth of Thunder's bench, with the introduction a number of their pathway players that have been selected in the VNSL squad this season.

During the final 12 minutes, Eaton grew in confidence and showed what an exciting future prospect she is for the franchise. Lucy Harris continues to impress, with a number of midcourt turnovers at vital times. However, Thunder showed why they are current champions by maintaining their structure throughout each quarter and ended the game victorious with a score of 27-60.

Vice-Captain Nia Jones commented after the game: "Obviously it’s a disappointing result for us but we have to stay positive and stick together because we have another opportunity to improve again tomorrow.

"Thunder’s consistency on centre pass conversion was better than ours today, and at this level that’s what we need to nail to be more competitive on the scoreboard come the end of each quarter."

Player of the Match: Joyce Mvula (Manchester Thunder)
