Saracens Mavericks overturn deficit to defeat Strathclyde Sirens 41-38

Saracens Mavericks won out a battle of the defensive pairs to defeat Strathclyde Sirens 41-38 and keep up their faint hopes of a top-half finish.

With Razia Quashie at one end and Towera Vinkhumbo at the other, neither team enjoyed an easy route to net.

The first quarter was a tactical tussle, with Sirens claiming the advantage after the opening 15 minutes going 14-9 up, but the fightback from Mavericks in quarter two was impressive.

Beth Ecuyer-Dale came on with energy in midcourt and the visitors also made a couple of changes.

Quashie and Monique Meyer were interrupting Sirens’ shooting both physically and mentally as the Scottish team repeatedly struggled to convert.

Not so for Britney Clarke and Kira Rothwell who kept cool heads and healthy scoring percentages as the hosts won the quarter 12-5 to go into the half-time break with a two-goal lead.

Sirens were in no mind to roll over and give the game away and fought hard in the third. However, Mavericks showed maturity as they patiently worked the ball around, looking for a way through.

Saracens extended their lead to five to set up a tense final quarter for the vocal crowd at Hatfield Sports Village.

The final fifteen minutes were absorbing as with only minutes to play, Sirens came within one goal of the home side.

Mavericks, however, held their nerve to score the final goal on the buzzer as Camilla Buchanan’s team won by three to move within three points of fifth-placed Severn Stars with a game in hand.
