Clare Jones announces her retirement

Cardiff Dragons 2023 captain Clare Jones has announced she will be hanging up her green dress and retiring from the Netball Super League (NSL).

The 32-year-old spent eight years with the Welsh franchise and made over 70 appearances.

In a message posted on the Cardiff Dragons website, Jones said: “It is with a fulfilled heart that I announce my retirement from Super League. I hang my Super League trainers up with a strong sense of pride, gratitude, and contentment.

“Playing for the Celtic Dragons [now Cardiff Dragons] has provided me with the fondest of memories, life learnings and true friendships! I look back on my Super League journey, starting as a 23-year-old training partner and I am thankful for all the laughs and comradery as well as the challenges and lessons. It has truly been a unique experience and to finish as Captain of a franchise I once dreamt of playing for as a youngster exceeded and surpassed all expectations, I ever had of myself.

“To my teammates both past and present, thank you for always accepting me both as a player and person and for always bringing the best out in me so that I could continuously strive to dedicate the best version of myself to the Celtic Dragons. I will forever be grateful to have trained and played with some of the best netballers across the world of which I am even more fortunate to now call them friends not just teammates.”

Last month, Jones played in her first Netball World Cup with Wales, helping them secure a ninth place finish.

Cardiff Dragons will announce their squad for the 2024 season next week.
