Flanagan to make it five seasons with Wasps

Wasps Netball have announced that they have re-signed 4 x Superleague Champion Amy Flanagan. Having won the title with Surrey Storm in 2015  and 2016 Flanagan made the switch to Wasps in 2017 where she picked up two more titles.

On signing for a fifth season Flanagan said “I am incredibly excited about the return of Superleague Netball, especially with the opportunity to play my 5th season in a Wasps dress! I am sure I wasn’t the only one disappointed by the abrupt end to the 2020 season and I am so grateful we are able to begin training as a squad again. It is always an honour to be offered a place with a Superleague team, and I was thrilled that Mel considered me an important part of the group heading forward. We have a great mix of youth and experience in our squad this season and I’m excited for the opportunity to play alongside such talented athletes! I have always felt incredibly welcomed by our supporters and the wider Wasps community, and this was another huge pull for me returning. I love the challenge each new season presents, and I can’t wait to get started!”

Head Coach Mel Mansfield commented “Fondly known as “Super Amy” in our squad, Amy is a player that every coach would want in their team. Her effortless attacking and dynamic defence makes her a fierce mid-courter, literally flying for the ball, making critical turnovers. She causes trouble for the opposition and is an important asset to our team. Season number 5 for Wasps sees her in an important leadership role as vice-captain.”

This follows the signing of Lily-May Catling who joins the Coventry based side from Australia.

Catling told Wasps Netball, “I am so excited to be playing with Wasps in the 2021 VNSL season. To be able to come home and play the game I love in my home country is an opportunity I am very grateful for, but to be a part of a club with such a high standard of success, and with such a strong family culture, makes it all the more special”

Mansfield remarked, “Another new player, adding strength to our defensive line-up. Lily-May is an English player who started her netball career at Weston Park Blades and was also part of the England Netball pathway, touring with the England u19 squad in 2013/14. Lily May has been playing her netball in Australia since the age of 18 and is currently a starting player for USC Thunder in the Hart Sapphire Series. We are delighted to be welcoming Lily-May back to the UK to play her netball this season. A young player, bringing a strong performance and playing background to our team, she brings experience, intensity and talent to our defensive unit.”
