Jets Team Manager nominated for Yorkshire Women of Achievement Award

One of the most influential figures in Yorkshire netball has been nominated for a Yorkshire Women of Achievement Award.

Gerry Plant, team manager for Yorkshire Jets, is being recognised in the Sports Category of the awards which are organised by charity Sue Ryder.

The former Northern Ireland international, who has lived in Leeds for the past 30 years, has coached in schools, universities and organisations around West Yorkshire and currently works for the YMCA.

As part of the management team at Yorkshire’s Vitality Netball Superleague team, she organises, manages and works with the players and coaches day-in, day out. She has been in the voluntary role for three years and is respected throughout the world of netball.

Gerry grew up in Belfast during the Troubles and discovered a love of the sport, practicing every day. At a time when there were barriers, both physical and otherwise, she recognises and understands how sport can make such a difference to people’s lives and break down those barriers.

Jets Head Coach Anna Carter was one of those who nominated Gerry, she said:

“Gerry is an inspirational leader – having played at the top of the sport, she has dedicated so much time and effort to selflessly promoting the sport, promoting opportunities for young people to participate and promoting them to be the best they can be – both at netball and, through that, in life more generally.

Her achievements are an inspiration; her legacy is huge. So often working hard behind the scenes with no recognition, she deserves her time in the spotlight and deserves this award.”

Over the years the Sue Ryder Yorkshire Women of Achievement awards have been celebrating remarkable women from across the county, whilst raising vital funds for Sue Ryder’s work in Yorkshire – providing incredible hospice and neurological care.

Last year, the awards raised more than £45,000 to spend on incredible care in the region. The event welcomes more than 700 of the most influential people across Yorkshire to the Royal Armouries in Leeds for the awards lunch.

This year’s event takes place on Friday 20 May.
