Share Wasps have confirmed that Josie Huckle will captain their Vitality Netball Superleague (VNSL) squad for the 2022 campaign. The 30-year-old has a wealth of Superleague experience having made her full debut for Saracens Mavericks in 2011 and has been an ever-present for Wasps since joining when the club was formed in 2017. Huckle played a key-part in the club’s two back-to-back title wins. For Huckle, the 2018 victory was her fourth VNSL championship in succession having previously won back-to-back titles with Surrey Storm in 2015 and 2016. The defender heavily impressed for the Midlands outfit last term. Only two more players in the division finished the 2021 season with more turnovers than Huckle’s 73. Huckle will play her first-ever game as Wasps captain at Season Opener 2022 in Birmingham against her former club Mavericks. To see Wasps face Mavs and/or Strathclyde Sirens, get your tickets HERE. The former England international, who is Head of Netball at Bedford Girls School, said: “I have always aspired to be a leader both on and off the court, and to one day be named captain of a Superleague team. “I was absolutely thrilled to be asked to be captain of Wasps for the 2022 season, to be trusted to lead such an exciting new team is an absolute honour. “This group is already something special and I am looking forward a strong pre-season ready to kick off our 2022 campaign.” Head Coach Mel Mansfield, who has worked with Huckle for a significant period of time, commented: “As one of the original Wasps, Josie has demonstrated her commitment and loyalty to the club since day one. “She has an infectious personality and brings her experience and energy to every session. Not only has Josie been an integral part of our VNSL group, but she has also invested her time and experience coaching to support the Wasps Netball Academy Programme. “I’m looking forward to seeing her evolve as a captain and help guide this new squad, as we begin our 2022 season.” As part of a new-look senior leadership team, Rachel Dunn and Iona Christian will take up roles as joint vice-captains for 2022. England international Dunn has won a joint-record seven VNSL titles in her prestigious career including two with Wasps. The 38-year-old has notably played in every Superleague season to date. Iona Christian, meanwhile, joined Wasps from Severn Stars in 2019. The creative mid-courter also recently made her debut with the Scottish Thistles under former Wasps player and Head Coach Tamsin Greenway.
