Vitality Netball Super League

Wasps Netball director Tamsin Greenway believes her side faces its toughest test of the season against Midlands rivals Loughborough Lightning this weekend.

The unbeaten league leaders host second-place Lightning at the Ericsson Indoor Arena on Saturday May 26 (7pm centre-pass) in a rematch of last season’s Vitality Netball Superleague Grand Final.

Loughborough arrive in Coventry seeking to extend their unbeaten run to seven games and in the process close Wasps’ lead at the top of the table to just three points.

Lightning’s star shooter Peace Proscovia currently leads the Superleague scoring charts, nearly 60 goals ahead of her nearest challenger, Wasps’ George Fisher.

Greenway therefore expects Lightning to challenge her side all over the court and thinks the game will reveal a lot about a Wasps side which has a dozen successive victories – a perfect record – for the season so far.

“This game will tell us where we are at right now in terms of our development,” she said. “Lightning are on a roll and they are the most dangerous team in the league.

“Loughborough might not have started the season the way they would have liked and have taken some time to settle, but they are now at the top of their game.

“The second half of the season is already playing out differently to the first half – we aren’t building big leads early on and our matches are now much closer.

“Structurally our defence is where we need to be, but in attack we are either on it completely or not quite there. That is something we need to keep working on.

“Saturday will answer some questions for us, but it’s not the be-all and end-all whatever happens this weekend. We are excited for the challenge.”

The black-and-golds came out on top in the first meeting of the two teams this season, winning 49-60 at the Sir David Wallace Sports Hall in March.

Fans with tickets to this Superleague clash can also watch the stars of the future beforehand in the Wasps Netball Academy Hub Grand Final.

Walsall Academy Hub will play Bedford Academy Hub in the Ericsson Indoor Arena, centre-pass is 4pm.
