Fuelled by last week’s narrow defeat to defending champions Loughborough Lightning, Wasps began the game with tempo which visitors Team Bath struggled to deal with.

The fast passing of Wasps’ offence, in particular Iona Christian and Lucy Parize, caused chaos for Bath as they battled to regain possession. This pace of passing drew numerous fouls from the frustrated visiting defence, who gave away 15 penalties in the first quarter alone. Wasps took advantage of this lack of focus and stormed into a 17-10 lead.

Team Bath gathered themselves going in to the second quarter, starting with more stability and keeping possession, to the frustration of Wasps fans. The away side closed the gap to 18-13 in the opening minutes, but Wasps found their feet once more and pushed forwards. A flurry of passes and goals put the hosts 24-14 up within minutes, as Rachael Fee and Josie Huckle turned the ball over repeatedly in a resolute defensive display.

The quarter slowed as the game became more physical. Neither side were able to retain possession for long enough without conceding a turnover, resulting in a brief goalless period mid-quarter. Just as it seemed Team Bath were building momentum, captain Josie Huckle intercepted a crucial pass to set Wasps on a successful attack and the goals began to flow once more. Wasps maintained their 10 point advantage and went into the half-time break with a 31-21 lead.

In a repeat of the second quarter, Bath battled back at the start of the third before Wasps responded to restore the points gap at 39-29. This pattern continued throughout the quarter, with momentum swinging back and forth and the points gap remaining roughly the same. Bath seemed to take a leaf out of Wasps’ book and began to pass more frequently and rapidly, but Wasps adapted swiftly and gradually increased their advantage. In a free-flowing final few minutes, the home team scored three goals unanswered and went into the fourth quarter up 49-35.
Despite being behind for the entire game, Team Bath refused to give in. The visitor’s captain Goal Shooter Kim Borger rallied her side and managed to reduce the deficit in the opening minutes. The hosts however were buoyed by a vocal home crowd who could sense that victory was within reach. Wasps’ substitutes tightened up their defence and held-out to win the game 62-50, the home side’s second win in three games. Team Bath will rue missed chances and a lapse in concentration in the first half which enabled the hosts to establish a commanding lead which couldn’t be broken.

Wasps Goal Attack Lucy Parize was awarded Gilbert Player of the Match, after a stellar performance in attack for the home side.
